First: The truth on motel rates. A friend of mine works for a large chain, one of the those listed below. Per my friend; if you call for a rate, make sure you specify their best rate, or if you qualify and are a member of AARP or other groups ask for that as well. Once you've gotten your best rate, say $80 for a night; ask them if they'll take $60 or whatever you think is fair. The majority of the time, they'll take vs. losing a room rent for the night.
Most motels are seldom more than 50% full, excluding some places like Wisconsin Dells, and during special events or weekends. They will gladly take your offer (if reasonable) and most clerks have a guideline to go by. You'll save money and that's what taking a trip is all about in these economic times. Ask for special deals, rates or promotions. Take advantage of specific motel chain discount programs. [stay anywhere for three nights and get a forth night free for example.]

Blue Swallon Motel - Tucumcarie
Quite simply, the best lodgings of any kind I've ever stayed in anywhere. The Blue Swallow has everything a Route 66 motel should have: Friendly owners, immaculate rooms, beautiful decor, attached garages, pink stucco walls, a small gift shop in the lobby, architectural neon everywhere, and a world-famous neon sign out front. On top of all that, it's got vintage rotary-dial phones in all the rooms and real towels -- the big, fluffy kind like you have at home -- in the bathrooms. At night, when the neon is lit up, there's nothing more beautiful than the Blue Swallow ... except maybe the sun setting over nearby Tucumcari Mountain. Do not, under any circumstances, pass through Tucumcari without stopping for a night at the Swallow. To make reservations, call (505) 461-9849. (During the winter months, the Blue Swallow closes, and the phone is shut off, but the proprietors still take reservations online.)
Lariat Motel Moriarty, NM. Small but cute vintage motel is currently undergoing restoration. Some rooms are already finished. Friendly owner is enthusiastic about her motel's place on Route 66. Amenities include cable TV and HBO. Prices are very reasonable. For reservations, call (505) 832-5158.
Monterey Non-Smokers Motel Albuquerque, NM. Gorgeous neon sign, clean rooms, and wonderful showers. Amenities include refrigerators and microwaves, in-room coffee, heated pool, and on-site laundry. El Rancho Hotel and Motel Gallup, NM. A Route 66 institution, the El Rancho bills itself as the "Home of the Stars" because of all the movie stars who stayed there while shooting Westerns on location in the Gallup area. Pets allowed. Amenities include a pool, lounge, gift shop and on-site restaurant. Hotel rooms are named after the celebrities who once stayed in them.
