First: The truth on motel rates. A friend of mine works for a large chain, one of the those listed below. Per my friend; if you call for a rate, make sure you specify their best rate, or if you qualify and are a member of AARP or other groups ask for that as well. Once you've gotten your best rate, say $80 for a night; ask them if they'll take $60 or whatever you think is fair. The majority of the time, they'll take vs. losing a room rent for the night.
Most motels are seldom more than 50% full, excluding some places like Wisconsin Dells, and during special events or weekends. They will gladly take your offer (if reasonable) and most clerks have a guideline to go by. You'll save money and that's what taking a trip is all about in these economic times. Ask for special deals, rates or promotions. Take advantage of specific motel chain discount programs. [stay anywhere for three nights and get a forth night free for example.]

Saga Motor Hotel Pasadena, CA. One of the best bargains in Southern California. Immaculate and beautifully decorated, the Saga offers many amenities, including a free newspaper, breakfast, a swimming pool, some refrigerators and on-site laundry.
