Sunglasses and Related Information
A NOTE: I had my vision checked this week, first time in six years. My opthamologist told me what we should wear for sunglasses when riding. So here's the latest, he learned at a eye care clinic training session. By the way, he works for a major Clinic/Hospital.
When buying any sunglasses, whether prescription or otherwise; You need to request the two following items:
A. Back glare prevention - this is the sunlight that gets in around your sunglasses and is actually harder on your eyes than regular glare directly at your eyes.
B. UVC protection is most important even ovr UVA and UVB, but you really need UVC protection, due to the ozone layer diminishing. So make sure all three are covered. Riders, Ray Ban, and American Optical Pilot are good suggested products, per my eye doc', but you make the call.
Maui Jim Sun Wear- Understanding the difference Maui Jim Logo
Maui Jim provides protection and comfort that surpasses traditional sun wear. Their patented PolarizedPlus®2 technology blocks all three types of glare (direct/horizontal, reflective, and bounce back) plus blocks 100% of UV rays up to 400 nanometers.
The technology also properly manages blue light by blocking harmful rays while at the same time enhancing the positive blue rays needed for color balance. In addition, Maui Jim’s PolarizedPlus®2 technology enhances color saturation and depth too; providing a better visual comfort for the wearer. This means that eye strain, squinting, and the feeling of being overpowered by glare is eliminated, with these lenses, thereby providing a comfortable outdoor visual experience. Please remember that not all sunglasses block 100% of UV rays.

All About Sunglasses and Vision
Transition Sunglasses - A note of caution. They take time to change from one light scenario to another, ie tunnels to lighted roads. Be careful, I know.
You cannot tell how much UV protection a pair of sunglasses will provide by their price, color, or by the darkness of the lenses. Before you buy a pair of sunglasses, make sure they offer UV 400 protection, which refers to protection from 400 nanometers UVA and UVB. The sunglasses should have a label on the sunglasses that says either "UV 400" or "100% UV Protection." The amount of UV protection sunglasses provide is unrelated to the color and darkness of the lenses. A light amber-colored lens can provide the same UV protection as a dark gray lens. Your optician can verify that the lenses you choose provide 100 percent UV protection.
But for HEV protection, color does matter. Most sunglass lenses that block a significant amount of blue light will be bronze, copper or reddish-brown (see lens tint guide ). |

Just as wearing sunscreen is the best way to protect your skin from the sun, wearing sunglasses is the best way to protect your eyes from UV damage. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to UV radiation can cause damage to retinas and increase the risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration. To help keep eyes properly protected from the sun, follow these simple rules:
Wear high-quality sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. Brands like Ray Ban and American Optical Pilot offer superior lens technology that blocks out sun without affecting visibility.
Don't take off sunglasses in the shade. UV rays can reflect off other surfaces, so eyes are still at risk even if they are not directly exposed to the sun.
Fresh snow can reflect 80% of UV rays, so protective eyewear is important even in the winter. Sunglasses will do the trick, but skiers and snowboarders should wear UV protected goggles for the best results.
It is never too early to start practicing eye safety. Children's eyes are more sensitive than an average adult, so be sure they are always wearing the proper eyewear. It is also a good idea to keep children out of the sun during peak sun hours, typically between 10am - 2pm. |
